Grant Hudson, RLA
Landscape Architect
Grant took a circuitous route to landscape architecture. Growing up in Southern California, he spent a lot of time camping with his father and the Boy Scouts, all throughout the Western United States. The beauty of the outdoors planted a seed of appreciation that led him to an interest in both nature and art.
He spent time looking into a career as a photographer, and especially connected with film photography because of the tactile focus of working with film in the dark room. While studying photography, he stumbled upon a secluded secret garden space at his school that was run by the horticulture department. While returning to take photos, he became interested in talking with the horticulture professors and discovered landscape architecture.
Grant transferred to UC Davis to study landscape architecture, where he was very involved with the student chapter of the ASLA. After graduating, he spent time working on very large scale projects including national parks, campuses and hospitals.
In both landscape architecture and photography, he is fascinated with discovering what it is that makes a design great and which subtle details take something to the next level.
Grant decided to join Arterra because he immediately felt the close relationships with the clients, partners and team, and the personal focus that’s possible in residential landscape design. He finds meaning in designing a landscape for someone who will potentially live in that landscape for the rest of their lives or start a family there. He considers it humbling and a huge responsibility to design a space for someone to live and grow in.
Outside of work, he is still taking photos and working with film. He also expresses his artistic side through painting in a surreal, abstract style. He spends as much time as he can outside while cycling, running and hiking around the Bay Area with his fiancée and her Goldendoodle.
