The gathering Table

A wonderful Menlo Park family came to us with a backyard they never used and a wish to reactivate the space. With an eclectic mix of art, artifacts and edible plantings, we extended the daily life of a three-generation family into the garden.

A cor-ten steel fountain sets the stage as both a feature for the living room and an invitation to explore the garden. A simple color palette of greens and greys ties the upper and lower gardens together, quietly linking the design inside with the surrounding landscape.

At the level of the main floor, a wraparound deck offers a series of entertainment spaces. This is where the family hosts casual dinners at the gathering table and cooks in the summer kitchen under the stars.

The family gathers in the lower garden around the firepit for marshmallows and after-dinner spirits. Within talking distance, the kitchen garden inspires foraging for the weekly harvest dinner and sparks lively discussions on what to plant each season. Orchard trees, vegetable beds in horse troughs and fruiting vines along the fence provide for ample delight and seasonal discovery.
