Garden Vignette

This city garden, located on Buena Vista Hill in San Francisco, is the result of a thoughtful, collaborative design approach.  The clients, who are avid gardeners, were drawn to bold geometric forms and beautiful materials. They requested a visually strong garden with water and lush plantings. The main garden was envisioned as a sculptural landform of rising and receding blocks of stone. Rendered in tinted concrete, these volumes are filled with water and soft plantings. The design feels both ancient and contemporary, giving this garden presence and profound meaning.

The deck above provides access from the kitchen to the outdoor dining area and spectacular city views. The perforated metal allows light and air to reach the lower garden. The elements at grade are grounded and substantial, while the soaring deck structure above is light and expansive. The contrast is striking and dynamic.

The resulting design transforms and activates the space, creating a visually stunning garden. Bold symmetry and sophisticated materials result in a spectacular viewing garden.
